Our intervention in Democratic Republic of Congo
In 2024, severe food insecurity affected more than 25.4 million people (IPC Phase 3 and above), including 3.5 million in a food emergency (IPC Phase 4).
According to the IPC (October 2024), 1.39 million children were still suffering from severe acute malnutrition. In December 2024, a total of 7.8 million people were internally displaced. The country is also affected by a number of epidemics (cholera, measles, malaria and monkeypox).
ACF responds to humanitarian emergencies, improves people’s access to basic services and fights malnutrition by tackling its underlying causes, integrating gender and protection. In North Kivu, ACF has provided healthcare and mental and psychosocial health services to conflict-affected populations in Bambo, Mweso, and in IDP sites around Goma, and has also built emergency sanitation facilities and distributed hygiene kits. In Ituri, in addition to treating severe acute malnutrition and supporting the health system, ACF has provided food aid through fairs and support for agricultural revival. In Mai Ndome, ACF is providing emergency health and nutrition assistance for children under 5 in Kwamouth. In Kasai Central and Maniema, ACF has contributed to the management of severe acute malnutrition, the strengthening of the health system and community nutrition activities, including during measles and cholera epidemics. In Kasai Oriental, ACF has implemented an agricultural recovery project to improve food security.
